Hagedorn
Michael lives in Portland, Oregon where
he creates, teaches and writes about bonsai. He is a bonsai
artist who spent 2 1/2 years apprenticing under Shinji Suzuki
of Nagano, Japan. He is the author of a book about apprentice
life, "Post-Dated:
The Schooling of an Irreverent Bonsai Monk" published in
2008. His art background ranges from painting and drawing to
ceramic sculpture and installation. Following a Master's Degree
in ceramic art from the New York State College of Ceramics at
Alfred University, he made bonsai containers for nine years in
upstate New York and Arizona. His bonsai work appeared in the
prestigious Kokufu show in Tokyo in 2004, 2005, and 2006 while
an apprentice, and Mr. Suzuki honored him with the opportunity
to wire two trees that went on to win a Koufu Prize and a Prime
Minster Award.
